LACK OF SOUTH CAROLINA MARRIAGE RECORDS

South Carolina marriage records are as hard to find as a skunk!

The earliest marriages were kept by ministers who rarely recorded them at the county court house since there was no law to do so.

One solution is to carefully compare wills and estates, searching for receipts given to the estates. When you find a receipt of a married daughter or son-in-law you have hit pay dirt.

Another remote solution is to search all of the county deed records, looking for gift deeds, familiar names and repetitive names to use as clues.
