The Scotch-Irish to South Carolina

During the 18th and 19th centuries there was a steady stream of Scottish people who  left Scotland and went first to Antrim, Ireland. (Irish records do not begin until much later).  From there they established a familiar path of immigration into the United States.  Next, they were in Berks and Burks Counties, Pennsylvania before moving on down into South Carolina around Laurens, Spartanburg, Union and Chester Counties.  Now, the digging begins!  Few marriage records were filed for record at local court houses by local ministers and the law was not in effect that it had to be recorded. That leaves the genealogist the tedious task of researching deeds, estates, and wills.  One must pay attention to the details of such records, taking note of neighbors and reoccurring names.  While researching census records, it is important to write down the names of adjoining families; in fact, everyone in that particular district or town.  You won't be sorry. The old Wills are somewhat revealing, as it names the heirs, friends and neighbors. Familiar names (from other searches) require attention in piecing together the trail of your ancestors and their relatives.  South Carolina Pioneers offers a wide selection of the earliest transcripts of last wills and testaments.  Also, it has scanned all of the wills in Charleston from the late 17th century through the 19th century.
